Omeo
A short drive from the Gippsland Lakes - the Omeo District is rich in history and endowed with beauty, making it an ideal destination for travellers wishing to tour the Australian Alps.
Travelling around Omeo is rewarding, as all routes are of scenic and historic interest.
Pastoralists settled this area in 1832. In 1851 Omeo was changed by the discovery of gold. Livingstone Creek was re-routed and used to sluice away gravel cliffs in the area known as the Oriental Claims.
In winter, Omeo is the gateway to the snowfields and the townships of Dinner Plain and Mt Hotham.

Walking

The spectacular gravel cliff faces with exposed tunnels, known as the "Oriental Diggings" are close to the Omeo township and are a highlight for visitors. There are walking tracks at the oriental diggings, with good signage. There are also picnic areas and marked tracks from which to view the cliffs. Omeo's gold rush history is reflected in its splendid old buildings. In the town centre you'll find the old Log Gaol, circa 1858, the old Court House, now housing a local museum, and a fine new Court House, circa 1893. |
| Touring | Clearly, set in a valley on the high plains, Omeo is an ideal base from which to enjoy the best of the Victorian Alps. |

History

When in Omeo, be sure to visit the Omeo Historic Park and Museum right in the heart of Omeo- consisting of the original courthouse (now operating as a museum) and a newer courthouse, which still operates as a court on a few occasions per year. Spend some time exploring the "Oriental Claims" on the edge of Omeo Township. A stunning example of alluvial gold mining of 100 years ago. |
